State Farm is doubling its Richardson data center with plans for new building

July 17, 2018
By Steve Brown
Real Estate Editor | The Dallas Morning News

State Farm Insurance plans to double the size of its data center in Richardson's Telecom Corridor.

The new tech center would be built on Lookout Drive south of State Farm's huge regional office campus at the CityLine development.

Three years ago, the Illinois-based insurance giant and Dallas developer KDC built a 129,180-square-foot data center at the corner of Lookout and Plano Road on part of the historic Spring Creek Farms.

Now State Farm and KDC have filed plans with the city to build a second 130,629-square-foot data center with office space on more than 8 acres at 1510 E. Lookout.

The data center would be next door to an Oncor electric substation.

Since the property isn't expected to house more than 20 workers, KDC is requesting a parking variance for the development.

"Data centers maintain a low percentage of occupants, typically within the office area, and have a small number of additional spaces for visitors and contractors," State Farm's Philip Reuter and Christiane Stoffer said in a letter to the Richardson plan commission.

Richardson is a major operation center for State Farm, with almost 10,000 employees working in four high-rise office buildings at Bush Turnpike and Plano Road in the CityLine complex.

Alliance Architects submitted plans for the data center project, which is just to the east of State Farm's existing facility.

North Texas is one of the country's top data center markets.

In 2017, the Dallas-Fort Worth area was second only to Northern Virginia for expanded data center facilities.
