Real estate development firm KDC launches fifth Richardson data center in Telecom Corridor

Plans for a 130,000-square-foot data center just south of Richardson’s CityLine development were confirmed Nov. 26 by real estate development and investment firm KDC, according to a press release.

Data centers—or buildings used to house large-scale computer systems—are well within the wheelhouse of KDC, which has built 15 data center developments for wholesale and enterprise customers across Texas, Virginia and Kansas since 2007. The structure at 1510 E. Lookout Drive will be the fifth KDC data center in Richardson.

“This greenfield data center project is located in a proven data center site and is adjacent to a large financial enterprise data center we previously developed,” said Ab Atkins, senior vice president-partner at KDC, in a statement. “It contains an onsite electrical substation that is owned and maintained by ONCOR.”

KDC negotiated an agreement with the city that will abate 50 percent of the data center’s business personal property taxes over a 10-year period. Mayor Paul Voelker said projects like the KDC data center are congruent with Richardson’s reputation as a breeding ground for technological ingenuity.

“Richardson’s legacy as a location for telecommunications innovation has created the vital infrastructure needed to support data center development and other cloud computing endeavors,” he said in a statement. “We will continue to support such planned developments that bring clean, high-tech projects to our community.”
