Richardson-based Fossil Inc. reported that third-quarter net income rose 2 percent, above Wall Street expectations, on strong global sales of watches and leather goods. Net income rose 2.1 percent to $69.6 million, or $1.09 per share, from $68.2 million, or $1 per share. Revenue rose 22.7 percent to $642.9 million from $523.8 million last year.

In response to growing demand for its communications semiconductors, TriQuint Semiconductor is boosting its head count at their Richardson plant by 31% this year and plans to invest $100 million in new equipment at the plant in the next five years.

TriQuint Semiconductor Inc., which is based in Hillsboro, Ore., the company’s Richardson staff should number close to 700, officials said.

Hank Mulvihill loves asset management, and he’s been doing it since 1987, when he started with Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. In 1995, after a transition to Alex. Brown & Sons Inc., Mulvihill struck out on his own and started Richardson-based Mulvihill Asset Management. The firm offers fee-based advisers focused on personal service and attention to portfolios and multigenerational estate and asset allocation planning. The firm is small, with just two licensed advisers and two other full-time staff members, but gets work done by outsourcing to Charles Schwab. As part of Moody’s recalibration of all municipal ratings to their global rating scale, the City of Richardson’s bond rating with the agency has changed from “Aa1” to “Aaa”. Aaa is the highest rating category assigned by Moody’s.

It's been said that if there's one type of job that's recession proof, it's a government job. After all, spending by federal and state governments tends to go up in recessions, and that's been especially true with President Obama's stimulus response. But it's not exactly true that government jobs are recession proof. Government employment growth has slowed to a trickle: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, government employment has added an average of about 5,000 workers a month over the past year. In June, the government sector actually lost 52,000 jobs.
