UT Dallas: Creating the Future
Vision and Strategies for The University of Texas at Dallas

The University of Texas at Dallas has a vision: to become one of the nation’s best public universities and one of the great universities of the world. The Dallas-Fort Worth region urgently needs this to happen.

UT Dallas has created a 10-year plan to achieve this monumental goal:

  • Increase faculty size from 400 to over 600
  • Double the research productivity from $50M to $100M
  • Add 5,000 new students, pushing enrollment to 21,000
  • Construct 1.5M square feet of new building space
  • Increase annual production of Ph.D.s from 100 to 300
  • Increase endowment by $300M and current use gifts by $150M
  • Invest in critical programs, centers and institutes
  • Invest in top-quality people

UTD already has many qualities shared by the nation’s best universities.
The freshman classes at UTD have one of the highest SAT scores among public universities in Texas.  UTD is one of only four universities in Texas whose faculty includes Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering.

Why does the Dallas area Needs UTD to Succeed?

While the State of Texas ranks 3rd in the US, behind California and New York, in economic productivity, it does not rank highly with respect to the number of leading universities.  The Association of American Universities, comprised of the nation’s best research universities, includes only three Texas schools, UT Austin, Rice University and Texas A&M University.  California has nine AAU universities and New York has seven.
Among the top 10 US metro area economies, only DFW lacks an AAU university. New York City and Los Angeles each have four and Chicago has two.  Dallas has NONE.

UT Dallas’ six strategies initiatives are:
1. Tomorrow’s Inventions
Strengthen research productivity, the engine that drives innovation
2. Prepare Students for Tomorrow’s Challenges
Prepare students for a lifetime of contribution and leadership
3. Manage Change in a Changing Society
Lead the constructive adaptation to our changing world
4. Secure the Safety of the Future
Create innovative means of ensuring the safety of the area’s people and        infrastructure
5.  Improve Health and Quality of Life
Contribute to the health and vitality of the people of the region
6.  Make a Great City Even Greater
Interact with our community to strengthen the University and the        surrounding region

UT Dallas Can Do It

The University’s ability to succeed in all the critical elements of this plan is proven.

The University has increased student enrollment by 65% in the past 10 years.  In the past year, the State and UT System have committed $130M toward new building projects at UT Dallas.  UT Dallas has proven its ability to attract support from the private sector as evidenced by the $30M gift that created the Eugene McDermott Scholars Program and its substantial $250M endowment.  Finally, the University has demonstrated an ability to recruit top quality people at all levels in the past several years.

UT Dallas can and will become one of the nation’s best public research universities and one of the great universities of the world – an engine of discovery, invention, creativity, and entrepreneurship for the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
