Two highly recognized public school districts serve the City of Richardson:

Richardson Independent School District (RISD)
and Plano Independent School District (PISD) consistently rank near the top of all Texas school districts due to their strong academic programs.
  • Both RISD and PISD are rated "Recognized" by the Texas Education Agency, and many individual school campuses receive the coveted "Exemplary" rating.
  • The RISD achieved the highest number of "Honor Roll" campuses (21) in the state of Texas as designated by the Texas Business & Education Coalition. Honor Roll is the most prestigious award for sustained academic excellence.
  • J.J. Pearce and Richardson High School were both named to the U.S. News & World Report's "Best U.S. High Schools". All RISD and PISD high schools rank among the top 3% in U.S.

There are 53 campuses ranked as either "Recognized" or "Exemplary". A large portion of RISD is in the North Dallas/Lake Highlands area. About 1/3 of students are from Richardson, and a small portion are from Garland.
