Methodist Health System and Richardson Regional Medical Center Plan Partnership
Both Parties Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Enter Operating Lease Agreement
The Richardson Hospital Authority (RHA) Board, the governing body of Richardson Regional
Medical Center, announced today that it is in exclusive talks with Methodist Health System (Methodist) to enter a longterm
operating lease.
“As I come to know more about Richardson Regional, I believe that our two organizations can accomplish substantial
synergy by working together,” said Methodist Health System President and CEO Dr. Stephen L. Mansfield. “Our
respective cultures sync up very well, as we both esteem our physician, community, and employee relationships highly
and have a very metric-driven approach to enhancing quality and customer experience. This relationship clearly
strengthens the Methodist mission, vision, and brand for the future.”
Under the proposed 20-year contract, Methodist would operate Richardson Regional and lease its facilities and
equipment. RHA would retain ownership of the hospital. Over the next several months, the two parties intend to
complete due diligence to finalize the terms of the agreement by mid-year.
“This strategic partnership with Methodist will strengthen our organization by advancing clinical programs and services,
supporting medical staff development, providing operational efficiencies, and allowing greater access to capital to fund
future growth,” said Ron Boring, President and CEO of Richardson Regional.
During this transition, it will be business as usual for Richardson Regional. Both parties do not expect any changes to
staffing or disruption of hospital services including health insurance participation, physicians, employees or programs
such as the Senior Health Center. Methodist and Richardson Regional are known as preferred employers and for their
high physician satisfaction. Both hospitals were selected as one of Dallas Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” in 2008,
and both Methodist and Richardson Regional have received statewide awards for quality.
“We are committed to continuing to do what we do best – provide high quality care to the community,” said RHA
Board Chair Bernard DiFiore. “We look forward to the opportunity to pursue new growth strategies and broaden our
scope of services with this new partnership.”
“The medical staff leadership at Richardson Regional supports this decision because partnering with a health system is a
positive step forward for both the hospital and the community,” said Brent Morgan, M.D., chief of staff at Richardson
Regional. “This is an exciting opportunity to expand clinical programs that complement our high quality services and to
develop future expansion plans at our Bush/Renner campus.”
Richardson Regional has been a community-owned hospital since 1966. It has evolved from a small, neighborhood
hospital to two thriving medical campuses – the Campbell and Bush/Renner campuses. The partnership is expected to
accelerate the expansion at Bush/Renner, which is currently home to a medical office building as well as an outpatient
hospital and cancer center that opened in October 2008.
“Richardson Regional has been a crucial and vital part of the Richardson community for over 40 years. Its leadership
and commitment to excellence is evidenced through the strategic decision to align with a formidable partner, Methodist
Health System,” said Steve Mitchell, Mayor of the City of Richardson. “This affiliation will ensure access to the most
innovative, high-quality health care services to the community.”
John R. Ford, Chairman of the Methodist Health System board of directors said, “By expanding the Methodist footprint
to Richardson, we work to achieve the service mission of quality, compassionate health care for which we are known.”
Ford adds that Methodist will draw upon its 80-year strength to be responsive to patient, employee, physician, and
community needs.
In recent years, Methodist Health System has experienced significant growth. An imaging center and medical office
complex was opened in Midlothian in 2005, and Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, an 80-bed acute care hospital in
Mansfield that opened in December 2006, is now undergoing a $37 million expansion. Major expansions during 2008
have included opening a 40-bed joint venture acute rehabilitation hospital in southwest Dallas; new Family Health
Centers in Midlothian, Methodist Charlton, and Lake Prairie; a new medical office plaza and Family Health Center in
Cedar Hill; new multistory parking garages and physician office buildings at Methodist Dallas Medical Center and
Methodist Charlton Medical Center; and a $116 million expansion project at Methodist Charlton, including an eightstory
72-bed patient-care tower. Methodist McKinney Hospital, a joint venture project with a group of physicians, is
also now under construction on a 24-acre site in the Stonebridge Ranch development in McKinney, with a scheduled
opening in late 2009.
