July 2008 This issue home | Past issues | Chamber home New Store and New Restaurant Open in Richardson
The long-awaited completion and opening of the new Lowe’s store at Richardson Square finally occurred on Thursday, June 26. The Mayor of Richardson, Steve Mitchell, other city council members as well as city staff and a number of the new Lowe’s employees were in attendance. Sue Walker, VP of Economic Development and several chamber ambassadors represented the Richardson Chamber. Lowe’s store manager, Brian Washburn gave the opening remarks and thanked Mayor Mitchell and city council members, Bob Townsend, Rhea Allison, Dennis Stewart and Pris Hayes, in addition to city manager, Bill Keffler and his staff, Fire Chief Alan Palomba and Police Chief Larry Zacharias, and other city staff who assisted in helping Lowe’s complete their new 130,000 square foot building in just over 3 months! Mayor Mitchell made his remarks welcoming Lowe’s and thanking them for their persistence throughout the process. The traditional ribbon cutting was done with a saw and a red 4”x 8” board to officially open the new store. Brian also mentioned Lowe’s community involvement with Habitat for Humanity and local school districts throughout the country. Last year Lowe’s stores and their employees contributed more than $25 million nationally to various charities, educational and community organizations in the communities in which they are located. As a demonstration of Lowe’s commitment to education and in honor of this new store, Brian presented Richardson ISD superintendent David Simmonds with a check for $1,000 towards school supplies for needy students.
Lowe’s investment of more than $18 million in their new Richardson building incorporates a new exterior design and materials as well as many energy efficiencies. The store will have about 175 employees when fully staffed. “The process to bring Lowe’s to Richardson began more than 5 years ago and we deeply appreciate their continued commitment to bring this store to this site during the time that the mall was deactivated, then demolished and the site made ready,” said Sue Walker. “Lowe’s is a great addition to this important retail intersection at Plano and Belt Line Roads. The Lowe’s motto, “Let’s Build Something Together”, is extremely fitting as the city, Lowe’s and Simon, the land owner, truly worked together to make this project a reality.” New Restaurant
A new Mexican food restaurant, Nico’s Tex-Mex Cantina, opened last week at 4150 E. Renner Road at North Star by the Snap Fitness and Starbucks. Owner Nick Velasquez, General Manager Fernando Sanchez and Chef Jesse Romo have designed a menu with both traditional Tex-Mex dishes, as well as Mexican-style seafood, like grilled tilapia, fish tacos and shrimp quesadillas and fajitas. The lunch menu has 11 items for quick service and patio dining is always available. Beer and wine areavailable and a full bar will be open soon.
