June 2008 This issue home | Past issues | Chamber home 81st Legislative Session Priorities Under Consideration The Richardson Chamber of Commerce’s Public Affairs Committee is the governmental relations committee that reviews legislative issues that are of concern to the Richardson community. Led by the tri-chairs Annette Ratliff, Amanda Rockow and George McKearin the committee keeps the chamber informed on local, state and federal government, education, transportation and workforce issues to protect the interests of the local business community. They also plan Richardson’s Legislative Day in Austin. The Public Affairs Committee has begun working on establishing the legislative priorities for the 81st Legislative Session for the State of Texas, which will begin in January, 2009. The Chamber keeps track of proposed legislation that could affect the community. Teams have been formed to watch committee hearings and actions on the interim charges. Areas being monitored include economic development, higher education, public education, taxation, transportation, healthcare, air quality, water and energy resources. The teams will report to the Public Affairs Committee monthly of any hearings and /or actions involving these priorities that were set forth by the committee as key issues affecting the business climate in Richardson. The Public Affairs Committee will then make a recommendation in October to the Board of Directors to adopt the legislative agenda for the upcoming session. Once every two years, the Richardson Chamber of Commerce hosts a group of interested business leaders to participate in Legislative Day in Austin. The participants will have an opportunity to meet their state representatives and spend a full day of activities at the State Capitol. The next Legislative Day will be in February or March, 2009.
