The 2008 Richardson Chamber Awareness Campaign

On April 22, 23 and 24, the chamber will be conducting a chamber awareness campaign, during which our chamber leaders will be trained by the most revered chamber consultant in the country, Joan Testa.

Joan spent an hour with two groups of volunteers on March 26th and explained how the community awareness campaign differs from past membership drives. Her company – Chamber Development Services is nearly 15 years old and Joan has personally conducted 650 campaigns across the country.

The following quote from Joan explains her philosophy:

“In all of our almost 650 Chamber campaigns, one thing has been consistent.  To be fully successful there must be a complete understanding and commitment to the project as a joint venture between the Chamber staff, community leaders, Board of Directors, ambassadors and our company.  The days of pure telemarketing and arm-twisting membership drives done by any Chamber volunteer willing to participate and/or call in favors, are over!  People are tired of hype – they want the steak not the sizzle!   Many other campaigns do not teach the value of the Chamber and often do not instill the concept of peer sponsorship of new members.

Admittedly, some board members and community leaders, while realizing that membership is the lifeblood of the organization, are less than enthusiastic about participating in any kind of a membership effort.  However, they end up realizing that the CDS Community Awareness Campaign and Outreach not only was successful in spreading the Chamber’s message throughout the area, but it was actually a positive personal experience.”

Joan emphasizes the mentoring of first year chamber members by their sponsors. She does not want volunteers to bring in large numbers of new members, just 2 or 3 each. But she does want those volunteers to take new members to events and get them involved on a deeper level with the chamber.

She has already done an analysis of our membership to identify areas of opportunity for our volunteers. After the campaign, she will produce a member retention manual to help us keep all new members engaged and active.

Finally. the campaign will also teach all of our members who participate how to explain the value proposition of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and how to handle objections to joining.

Volunteers are always welcome. Please contact Suzanne Potter at 972.792.2805 or Drew Snow at 972.792.2855. We promise you’ll learn something new about your chamber!
