February 2008 This issue home | Past issues | Chamber home Chinese National Opera to make appearance in Richardson The Eisemann Center in Richardson is one of only six performing arts centers in the United States to host the U.S. debut of the first Western-style interpretation of the classis Chinese opera, “Farewell My Concubine” on February 5-6. The six-city U.S. Tour is being presented by the Chinese American Inter-Cultural Exchange Foundation (CAICE Foundation), a Dallas based non-profit organization promoting cultural exchange and understanding between China and the U.S. through the arts. "We are delighted and honored to have the Chinese National Opera's tour of this outstanding production grace our stage,” said Bruce MacPherson, Managing Director of the Eisemann Center. “This will be a rare opportunity for opera lovers throughout North Texas to see this impressive company made possible by the CAICE Foundation. We believe the intimacy of our venue will only add to the overall enjoyment audiences will experience." The U.S. tour marks the first performances of the newly-scored opera, one of the rare times than an original Chinese opera will be performed in the U.S. Sung in Mandarin, the new “Western Style” production captures the framework of an Italian opera. The story itself dates from over 2,200 years go in China, set at the end of the Qin dynasty. The love story revolves around the heroic warrior and his beloved concubine and is popular in present-day China for its familiar theme, characters and ill fated romance. The well-known Chinese love story is also the inspiration for a play, a novel and a 1993 Oscar-nominated movie. The opera marks the 130-person China National Opera House troupe’s U.S. debut. Based in Beijing, the China National Opera it is one of the few performance groups staging “Western-style” opera productions in China. The tour opened to sold out audiences and raving reviews in San Francisco on January 12-13, and again on January 19-20 in Pasadena, California. The opera will also be performed in Washington, D.C, New York City, and Houston.
