December 2007 This issue home | Past issues | Chamber home Business Breakfast Changes Name and Focus When the monthly breakfast meeting of small business owners and entrepreneurs opens the previously known "Richardson Business Breakfast" 2008 series on January 18th, the program will be known as the "Small Business For some Chamber members, that name may sound familiar. The SBRT, however, will not be the same old program. Gone are the programs that are by nature informational. Instead the mission of the SBRT is to “provide an educational forum for business.” The presentations will be hard hitting, business topics presented in informal breakfast setting. “After three years of calling the program a business breakfast and trying to focus on broad subjects, the steering committee realized this program was the only true educational program offered by the Chamber. We want this program to focus on business education. The return to the original name really clearly defines and reflects the program’s true mission, “said Hul Kenney, long-time member and current tri-chair of the steering committee. In a series of planning sessions dating back to July of this year, the committee not only developed the program’s first true mission statement, but revised the goals and action plans. The primary goal of the program is to deliver a high-quality educational program that provides cutting edge information on the operation and management of a small business. The program’s primary audience is business owners, although the breakfast sessions are always open to anyone. The committee also hopes to raise attendance above the levels of the past two years by developing fast paced, topic driven sessions. “We determined that the value-add for small business owners is the topic. Our presentations will deliver content that provides educational value and techniques that can immediately be put to use in their business. The delivery of the topic is important, so the speaker is equally important, but our experience over the past few years clearly indicates it is the content that drives the overall program,” said Joe Costantino, a 2008 tri-chair of the steering committee. The program will continue be held monthly except in July and December on the third Thursday morning of every month at the Holiday Inn Select in Richardson. The committee has the flexibility to move the day, the time and the length of the program to provide a greater opportunity for people to attend. At least six of the topics will be focused on the growth of a business through sales and marketing. The remainder of the programs will range on such topics as customer service, managing finances, tax issues or health care issues. “We want to have the flexibility of offering a program or two outside of the normal breakfast format, maybe even a half day seminar, if the topic is considered worthy of such attention,” said Harry Polly, committee tri-chair. The committee developed the new approach his summer in a series of lengthy planning sessions after attendance at the breakfast sessions began to decline. Now, the committee, equipped with a new mission and a clear focus on business owners, believes the Small Business Roundtable will become a tool that small business owners and managers can depend on to help them meet the increasing needs of running their business.Action News is a monthly publication of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce Communications Department.
