New Teachers Luncheon a Phenomenal Success

Richard Ramey, Chairman of the Board for the Richardson Chamber of Commerce, welcomes new teachers.

As 520 new teachers entered the Renaissance Hotel Dallas-Richardson on August 16, 2007, excited electricity filled the air. The start of a new school year loomed around the corner, the compelling presentation by Captain Scott O'Grady left many astonished, and the business community said thank you for being a teacher.

Total attendance numbered 720 people as the new teachers were joined by their school principals, PTA presidents, and representatives of Richardson community.

Each teacher received a goodie bag filled with school items and personal knick-knacks, and they also have a chance to win a door prize. This year, there were over 120 door prizes donated by 40 different companies from around the area. The looks on the winners’ faces were absolutely priceless.

Incoming teachers from all of the Richardson Independent School District are invited, as well as PTA Presidents and Principals from their respective schools. Community is also allowed to attend to come and show their support for Richardson’s education system.

With the new teachers, PTA Presidents, Principals and community, over 750 people filled the ballroom. As the new teachers entered, they received goodie bags filled with over 30 different items donated by companies from the community. After lunch was served, Scott O’Grady stood up to speak about his horrifying time in Bosnia. The awed looks on the faces of the crowd could have given anyone chills. Tears even flowed from the eyes of the teachers that could relate to his message. They were able to understand that you cannot give up when faced with a difficult challenge and that they too are heroes.

Dr. David Simmons, RISD Superintendent, joins Dr. Clayton Oliphint, Martha Rocha, David Addison, Richard Ramey, Courtney Tanner, Scott O'Grady, Mayor Steve Mitchell, Luke Davis and Pam Anderson at the head table.

After an emotional rendition of “God Bless America”, the luncheon was adjourned. As the teachers began to leave one could not help but think these are the future of our children; these people will soon change the

lives of another.

Thank you to On the Mark Printing for the program, Gunter's Greenhouse and Florist donated flowers and the speaker's gift was donated by Hewlett-Packard, Co.

Thank you to all of our goodie bag and door prize donors:

Door prizes and goodie bags put smiles on the new teachers faces. Goodie bags were doneated by Texans Credit Union and filled by over 31 companies.
