May 2007 This issue home | Past issues | Chamber home Partner’s Program Going Strong in RISD
Because of RISD’s strong commitment to the students’ safety and well-being, there are certain qualifications a volunteer must meet. These include going through a detailed background check and filling out a one page application before being approved. It may sound like extra work, but once you are approved, the benefits of the program are unlimited. With your specific volunteer opportunities, the business and/or community group is required to spend 30 to 45 minutes once a week, once a month or twice a month working one-on-one with a student. The choices are rather vast in what you can do with your student. You can eat lunch with a student and act as a role model for them, you can tutor students, read to students or you can even mentor students interested in your field of work. Since not everyone has the time to volunteer, donations are always welcome. Since schools are frequently in need of equipment or materials for curriculum, enrichment projects, programs or events, certain partners may be in a position to donate such items as circumstances allow. The things that are most needed now are school supplies, teacher incentives and sponsorships for field trips.
