May 2007 This issue home | Past issues | Chamber home Leadership Richardson Class XXIII - Public Education Session
For most, April means tax season, but for participants in Leadership Richardson it was TAKS – the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills – the annual series of tests for most Texas public school children. Education was the featured topic for the class and what they learned is that TAKS isn’t so easy! The day started with a panel discussion by Richardson ISD trustees. They were peppered with questions about their roles as trustees, the biggest challenges they see in the public school system and the good things happening in Richardson ISD. The class was also treated to a tour of the district’s flagship high school and Richardson’s award winning magnet programs. Student ambassadors, all of whom are part of the school’s leadership team, conducted the tours. The district’s new superintendent, Dr. David Simmons, was able to talk about his decision to come to RISD and how he viewed the district as a relative newcomer. Most notable, according to Dr. Simmons, was the district’s state and national reputation for producing quality students and programs. After an enlightening view of high school in the 21st century from members of Richardson Youth Leadership, the class got to see first hand how technology is being used in the classroom. The day was closed with a session on higher education from Richland College staff members, along with a tour of The University of Texas at Dallas Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory and Callier Center. The Public Education Session was planned by class members Jim Henderson, Angela Lily, Jay Scifres, Bryan Sylvester, and Lori Villarreal and Classmates gave the day a grade of A+.
