As part of their yearlong leadership development and community orientation program, participants in the 22nd annual Leadership Richardson class are all responsible for planning at least one of the nine class sessions undertaken between September 2006 and May 2007.  With the recent completion of November, December and January sessions, 15 class participants fulfilled their session planning responsibilities and introduced other class members to educational, interactive presentations about critical community needs and leadership opportunities.

The November Leadership Richardson session, planned by class members Nick Adamson, Rebecca Arndt, Richard Covington, Ed Hotz and Kim Quirk, included presentations by Richardson ISD counselors about the needs of the district and schoolchildren, followed by a tour of three local social services agencies – the YMCA, Neighborhood Youth and Family Counseling and the NETWORK of Community Ministries.  Overall, the session highlighted the needs of a hypothetical, underprivileged family living in Richardson, and educated the class about the services available to such a family.  Texans Credit Union sponsored the November session.

In December, Leadership Richardson class members had an Arts & Culture experience, volunteering in the morning at Santa’s Village as a treat for area pre-school children and their families, and spending the afternoon at the Eisemann Center for presentations by various local arts groups.  Class members Bobbi Klein, Kim Lott, Souk Tran, Andy Tubbs and David Waters planned the December session, which was hosted by First Bank of Canyon Creek and the Eisemann Center.

Most recently, in January 2007, the Leadership Richardson class learned about city government and toured economic development and redevelopment sites to learn about civic involvement needs and opportunities for community leadership.  In the morning, class members visited the Richardson Civic Center, where they witnessed presentations by city staff members on everything from water planning to the workings of the city’s parks department.  Participants also took up a challenge from city planners, attempting to allocate retail, office and residential developments to empty plats of land based on future population projections.

After the morning session, the class toured DART’s Spring Valley light rail station, where a new multi-use complex is under construction, and visited II Creeks, a residential development that is replacing one of the city’s older shopping centers.  Class members also learned about Richardson’s Tax Increment Finance (TIF) district and how city leaders expect the district to benefit Richardson in the future, before finally observing a mock city council meeting led by Richardson officials.

Class members Sharon Allred, Terry Dalton, Richard Luttrell, Kim Morris and Steven Richards developed the day’s program, entitled “Extreme Makeover 2016,” to showcase the future of the city.

Congratulations to the committee members for all three sessions, for completing their planning requirement and for developing meaningful programming to expose their Leadership Richardson colleagues to the community’s leadership needs!

Leadership Richardson is sponsored by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and serves as a means to develop the city’s next generation of community volunteers.  Applications for the next Leadership Richardson class will be available in the spring.
