When it comes to making a decision about the future, high school juniors can easily become stressed and confused. For this reason, the Richardson Independent School District (RISD), with the help of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee, created the RISD Career Summit. The event was held January 22nd at the Renaissance Hotel and Eisemann Center, and it allowed the juniors to become more familiar with the many different career fields and help them to better select a path for post-secondary education. Juniors from the four Richardson high schools, Lake Highlands, J.J. Pearce, Berkner and Richardson, participated in the all-day event. Dru Bookout, a Richland College motivational speaker, welcomed students to the event with a message on the importance of making the best career choice and how to stay happy throughout the time in their chosen profession. For the remainder of the day, students attended four different breakout sessions related to making decisions about their future career. Each breakout had a different theme on career choices and opportunities. In the “What’s After High School” breakout, students visited with representatives from local colleges and technical schools to discuss what to study in college, how to earn college credit in high school and even how to choose the appropriate college for their fields of study. In the “Where Can I Help?” breakout, a panel of university students discussed why community service is important and how students may become involved. At the “Non-Traditional Roles” breakout, students learned that career choices are not limited to gender. The panel included a male nurse, a female police officer, a female engineer and a female coroner. At the “Future Career Opportunities” breakout, students were able to visit one-on-one with people representing careers in sixteen different industry career clusters. Thanks to Richardson Chamber businesses and several other professional organizations, students had the opportunity to question over one hundred industry representatives. The students, as well as the industry representatives, said the event was outstanding. One of the industry representatives, David Ashmore, Vice President of Strategic Planning at Blue Cross Blue Shield, raved over the program and what it offered the students. “I gained a better understanding of the difficult choices students have to make, “Ashmore said. “I also learned how they gain information to make their choices.” Based on the success of this year’s event, future juniors in RISD can look forward to participating in the Career Summit for years to come. We would like to give a special thank you to the following companies and their volunteers for participating in the event:
