Leadership Richardson's October Session Provides "Springboard To Success"

By Kim Quirk, Class XXII participant

Leadership Richardson class members Richard Covington, Lori Villarreal, Debra Marable, Laura Maczkaa and Bobbi Klein participate in October's session.

It may have looked like all fun and games, but it was actually a significant learning experience for the 34 members of this year’s Leadership Richardson class.  The effort is sponsored by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and serves as a means to develop the city’s next generation of community volunteers.

Class XXII, who describe themselves as the “best class,” spent a day in October with Dick Hammond, Leadership on the Move, a noted facilitator in helping create solid management skills in individuals.

During the session, Hammond posed questions to the group such as “Are you red, green, blue or yellow?”, “Are you analytical or emotional?”, and “Are you a doer or a thinker?”  The first step in unlocking true leadership was a self discovery exercise to find out what kind of personality each has.  That was followed by a kid-like game where participants had to get marbles out of a circle with only a plastic spoon and a 6-foot pole.  Although funny and frustrating, the end result was a lesson in teaming and trust.

These and numerous other exercises set the stage for the next seven months, during which Leadership Richardson participants will learn about various aspects of the Richardson community.  The next session is Social Services Day, followed by in-depth sessions on everything from city government to arts and culture.
