November 2006 This issue home | Past issues | Chamber home Collins Technology Park To Be Re-Born As Data Center Collins Technology Park has a long history in Richardson, as the heart and soul of the Telecom Corridor® area, and today that core property is about to experience a re-birth as a state-of-the-art data center, reaffirming the City of Richardson’s key role as a high-tech home. Developers recently announced that the 109-acre, former Alcatel campus will be transformed into a 2 million-square-foot data center, as noted in a front-page story in the Dallas Business Journal. With corporate data storage and Internet usage at an all-time high, companies are demanding a secure and reliable data center location. Typically, these data centers require a small city’s worth of electricity to run adequately, which many cities cannot support. The Collins Technology Park location has, according to experts, the most impressive convergence of fiber and excess electricity in the United States, and the ERCOT power grid in Richardson is considered one of the most reliable power grids in the nation. More than 1 million square feet of data center space at Collins Technology Park are currently being redeveloped by Tod Fobare, a principal with Skyrise Properties, and will be available for move-in by mid-2007. The development is being marketed by CB Richard Ellis. “This project is already generating interest from top corporations around the nation and will provide a substantial number of technical jobs for Richardson,” said Fobare. “We would like to thank the city for its cooperation and for allowing us the opportunity to provide future tenants with the best data center services available.” The technology park has two onsite electrical substations as well as eight existing fiber providers. In addition, the one- and two-story, free-standing buildings in the park are being redeveloped to meet the standards of today’s modern and efficient data center requirements. Its Richardson location is also ideal in its proximity to amenities and North Central Expressway. “We are very excited to work with such an experienced and knowledgeable developer such as Tod Fobare on the re-development of Collins Technology Park,” said Richardson City Manager Bill Keffler. “We are enthused to help create a truly unique offering within the DFW Metroplex and the nation. This data center is one more key advantage, added to the many that Richardson already has to offer for companies with growing and complex needs.” Action News is a monthly publication of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce Communications Department.
