Joe’s Pizza, Pasta & Subs is the name of the new restaurant at 1403 E. Campbell Road (northeast corner of Campbell and Plano roads) but the long exterior sign says it all: Joe’s * Pizza * Pasta * Hamburgers * Soups * Salads * . . . and the list could go on and on. Part of a New York-style pizza franchise based in New York, local owner-operator Mike Homayoun and his partner opened their first Joe’s Pizza and Pasta in Plano 12 years ago. That restaurant was voted a co-winner, with Covinos (owned by another New York Joe) of the Best Pizza in Plano award. “I knew that this location and space (close to 5,000 square feet) in Richardson would be a good site for us,” said Homayoun, “because I lived in this area in the late 70s. And so far the response has been very good because of the style of pizza and other Italian dishes as well as the good prices.” A veteran restaurant manager, Homayoun said that he learned how to make great pizza – and other foods – when he was working with Italian chefs in Hamburg, Germany, some 25 years ago. “We have a large, balanced menu,” he said, “with specialty and deep dish (Sicilian) pizza, calzones, pasta, appetizers, great salads, plus chicken, veal and eggplant entrees. We even offer hot and cold subs, hamburgers and hearty soups. With all the choices and the large, open dining area, it’s geared toward families. "We even sell a lot of hamburgers – especially the mushroom and provolone – because we only use Angus beef so the quality – and taste – is really good. It’s an eight-ounce patty, too.” (Maybe some of the previous clientele – Joe’s is on the site previously occupied by Purdy’s Hamburgers – are still coming by this intersection for great food.) Some signature dishes worth trying include: Joe’s chicken and penne pasta, stuffed shrimp and crab meat parmigiana and the margherita pizza. And if you have any stomach space left, Joe’s has two popular desserts – chocolate passion cake (three layers plus chocolate chips) and key lime pie – and such Italian favorites as tiramisu and homemade canolis.
