RCC & UTD Join Forces For Family Sports Night

UTD basketballNew University of Texas at Dallas President Dr. David Daniel and the UTD Athletic Department are inviting all members of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and their families to visit the campus for the First Annual RCC/UTD Family Sports Night, set for Thursday, Feb. 16.

Dr. Daniel will host a reception for RCC members between games of an intercollegiate basketball doubleheader, featuring UTD’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. The reception, which will begin at 6:45 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UTD Activity Center, will provide Chamber members with an opportunity to meet Dr. Daniel and other members of the UTD faculty and staff, as well as learn more about UTD’s increasingly larger role in the local and regional community.

RCC members and their families are also invited to attend the UTD basketball games with Louisiana College as guests of the UTD Athletic Department. The Comets will meet LC in a women’s basketball game, starting at 5:30 pm.  The men’s game will follow at approximately 7:30 pm. Both UTD teams are in the thick of the American Southwest Conference (ASC) East Division chase and will be vying for post-season playoff positions during those games.

During the men’s game, Dr. Daniel will also serve as the Comets’ Honorary Coach as part of an Athletic Department program which honors various UTD faculty/staff members throughout the season. Dr. Daniel will sit on the bench with the team during the game.

The purpose of this event is to give Richardson business leaders a first-hand opportunity to look at and discuss the tremendous growth that has taken place at the university since it first opened its doors in 1964. UTD is one of the fastest-growing universities in the state and now has more than 14,500 students – including more than 7,500 undergraduates – with plans for further expansion in the near future.

UTD already ranks as one of the most prestigious scholastic universities in the state, with nationally-recognized academic programs in the fields of computer science, electrical engineering, nanotechnology, Sickle Cell research and brain health. Under Dr. Daniel’s direction, UTD is also in active pursuit of becoming a “tier one” national research university – which would mean generating more than $100 million of annual research income.

The UTD athletic program is equally as committed to excellence. The Comets, who are members of the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference, are perennial contenders in almost all 13 of the intercollegiate sports programs the university sponsors. In the past four years, UTD teams have won or shared four different ASC championships.
