Annual Business Appreciation Luncheon Set For Nov. 3

New UTD President Dr. David Daniel To Keynote Event

The RCC's 23rd Annual Business and Industry Appreciation Luncheon is set for Thursday, Nov. 3 at The Richardson Hotel, 701 E. Campbell Road. This year's event is presented by Community Credit Union and will feature keynote speaker Dr. David Daniel, president, University of Texas at Dallas.

Dr. Daniel will discuss "Why A World-Class Research University Is Important To North Texas."

The event will begin at 11:45 a.m., with networking and check-in starting at 11:15 a.m. The cost is $30 for RCC and Rotary Club members and $45 for the general public.

The Chamber's annual B&I Luncheon recaps the business growth of Richardson and recognizes area businesses for their part in promoting the community.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. David E. Daniel became the fourth president of the University of Texas at Dallas on June 1, 2005. He was selected for the position the previous February by the University of Texas System Board of Regents following a lengthy nationwide search.

Daniel previously served as Gutgsell Professor of Civil Engineering and Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980 and served on the faculty there until 1996, when he moved to the University of Illinois. He became dean of Illinois' College of Engineering, one of the top such programs in the country, in 2001.

Daniel is a noted scholar and member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering. His research has focused on engineered containment systems for waste disposal and on the cleanup of contaminated waste disposal sites. He is editor of the book Geotechnical Practice for Waste Disposal and is co-author of the books Waste Containment Facilities and Engineered Covers for Solid Waste Landfills and Abandoned Dumps .

He has won the American Society of Civil Engineers' highest award for papers published in its journals (the Normal Medal) and on two occasions has been awarded its second highest award for papers (J. James Croes Medal). He also has received ASCE's highest award for geotechnical papers published in its journals (Middlebrooks Award). Daniel served for three years as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering. He has served as a member of the National Research Council's Board on Energy and Environment and on its Geotechnical Board.

Daniel has taught more than 125 continuing education and training courses on waste containment, which have been attended by more than 15,000 engineers and scientists. Between earning his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, he worked for three years as an engineer for Woodward-Clyde Consultants in San Francisco and Oakland.

He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2000.
