More than 450 teachers are expected to attend this year's event. The New Teachers Luncheon is the longest-running event of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and is the business community's opportunity to recognize the importance of education and show its support for Richardson ISD educators. The event will be held at the Renaissance Richardson Hotel, 900 E. Lookout Drive. Tickets are $30 for PTA presidents, principals and RISD administrators, $35 for Chamber members and $45 for non-members. To make a reservation, visit the Chamber's Web site.
Donations are also needed for door prizes and goodie bags for the teachers. The deadline to sponsor this year's event is July 26. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Dr. Moses has served in Texas public education for more than 30 years as a teacher, administrator and superintendent, most recently for the Dallas Independent School District. From 1995 to 1999, Dr. Moses served as Texas Commissioner of Education, appointed twice by then Gov. George W. Bush. In 1999, he joined the Texas Tech University System as deputy chancellor. A native of Nacogdoches, Dr. Moses earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University and his Ed. D. from Texas A&M University at Commerce. He is the author and co-author of a number of articles on student performance, accountability and teacher preparation and has given more than 600 speeches to education, business, civic and community groups. He has appeared before legislative committees on more than 30 occasions and was invited to address the U.S. Congress freshman class concerning issues in public education. Among awards Dr. Moses has received are the Texas Business and Education Coalition's Distinguished Service Award and Texas A&M University 's Golden Deeds Award in Education. The Texas School Public Relations Association awarded Dr. Moses its 1998 Key Communicator for Public Education award. Both the national and Texas PTA organizations have presented him with life memberships. He was also selected School Superintendent of the Year in two of Texas ' educational regions. President George W. Bush said that of the more than 3,000 appointments he made while governor of Texas, the appointment of Mike Moses as Commissioner of Education was the best appointment that I have ever made. |
