April 2005 Volume 2, Issue 4 This issue home | Action home | Chamber home River Of Trade Coalition Seeks To Protect Traditional NAFTA Trade Route
Leslie Jutzi, manager of intergovernmental affairs for the City of Dallas, conducted an informative meeting about the River of Trade Corridor Coalition (ROTCC) at the Chamber's Transportation Committee's quarterly meeting on March 16. The ROTCC was formed in September 2004 by officials of the cities and counties along the traditional NAFTA trade corridor in Texas, which runs from Laredo to Texarkana via Dallas. Many along the route are concerned about the potential impact of the Trans-Texas Corridor (TTC). The TTC is a proposed multi-use, statewide network of transportation routes in Texas that will incorporate existing and new highways, railways and utility right-of-ways. Plans call for the TTC to be completed in phases over the next 50 years with routes prioritized according to Texas transportation needs. The ROTCC predicts that if the trade corridor is changed or shifted it could have a profound economic impact on the "approximately 10 million Texans who live and work in the 61 counties along the existing trade route." Jutzi said the ROTCC is not opposed to the TTC plan, but rather, that it wants to keep the new corridor flowing through, or as closely as possible, to the existing NAFTA corridor.
