April 2005 Volume 2, Issue 4 This issue home | Action home | Chamber home Chamber Working With Local Retailers To Support, Enhance Business Opportunities
One topic of discussion at the Chamber's Retail Consulting Advisory Group (RE-CON) luncheon meeting on March 17 was the Richardson Retail Demographic and Community Profile 2005, recently developed by Sue Walker, vice president of corporate development for the Richardson Economic Development Partnership (REDP). The 2005 Retail Profile contains current demographic executive summary reports, demographic snapshot reports, information on retail assistance, retail, restaurant and transit-oriented development and an economic outlook for the City of Richardson; as well as Richardson demographics, city services and amenities, a traffic volume flow map, traffic counts at key intersections and a retail aerial map. The RE-CON group, which meets bimonthly, consists of owners, developers and leasing company representatives for retail centers and properties in Richardson. The group gets together with the Chamber's Economic Development team, and selected members of city staff, to discuss ways in which Richardson can develop, enhance and stimulate retail development in the city. The retail center owners/managers give brief updates on the centers/properties that they lease/manage, while we provide a status report on current retail development activities openings, closings, prospects, and programs - in Richardson, Walker said. I also announced that we had 93 restaurants participate in our 'Dine Out in Richardson' promotion, which started on St. Patrick's Day and ran through March 27, she said. John Jacobs, senior vice president of economic development for the REDP, talked about office and commercial prospect interest in Richardson, including developments like the new $3 billion Texas Instruments semiconductor plant, which is under construction at Alma and Renner roads, and the Countrywide project at Galatyn Park. Those projects will add more than 6,000 workers to Richardson's workforce, and will have a positive impact on local retail operations over the next several years. Other projects mentioned included The Shire, at Jupiter and Highway 190 being developed by renowned restaurateur, Dale Wamstad, and the II Creeks residential-commercial development in the Canyon Creek/Lookout area. In the open discussion, we invite any news, rumors or issues that the Chamber and City need to be aware of, as well as opportunities for retail, transit-oriented development and trends in this industry sector, Walker added.
