Group Takes Legislative Agenda To Austin

Richardson Delegation Meets With Lawmakers, Visits House & Senate Chambers

A 40-member delegation made up of members and staff of the Richardson Chamber of Commerce descended on Austin on March 1-2 for Richardson Telecom Corridor® Legislative Day. Legislative Day provides Richardson business leaders and residents the opportunity to visit with state legislators and discuss the Chamber's legislative priorities.

“Meeting our area representatives and being engaged in the legislative process, even for one day, was a positive and rewarding experience,” said Legislative Day participant Steve McQuay, Texas Instruments. “We all must pay closer attention to this process. It is very important to the future success of our state and Richardson."

Highlights of the group's visit included:

  • a Tuesday evening reception hosted by Haynes & Boone;
  • dinner on Tuesday evening with remarks from State Sen. John Corona and State Reps. Fred Hill, Jerry Madden and Tony Goolsby;
  • a Wednesday breakfast with remarks by Phil Wilson, Gov. Rick Perry's deputy chief of staff who discussed the introduction of bills in the Senate and House for the creation of the Texas Emerging Technology Fund;
  • a Wednesday briefing at the Capitol with remarks from Speaker of the House Tom Craddick and Sen. Florence Shapiro;
  • and Wednesday visits to the House and Senate chambers where resolutions recognizing the Richardson delegation were introduced. In addition, the legislature recognized the Richardson Police Department for its 50th anniversary and the University of Texas at Dallas' Chess Team for their national success.

Some of the issues which the delegation sought to support were: finding an acceptable solution to fund public schools; continued financial backing of the Texas Enterprise Fund; an increase in funding for the University of Texas at Dallas; and relief for the worker's compensation crisis.

A complete listing of the Chamber's legislative priorities can be found on the Chamber's Web site.

Legislative Day was presented by the Public Affairs Committee of the RCC, in conjunction with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, the City of Richardson, Richardson Independent School District and the University of Texas at Dallas.
