Site Manager For New TI Fab Addresses Semiconductor Suppliers

Progress is shown on Texas Instruments' new semiconductor manufacturing complex which broke ground Nov. 18, 2004. The plant will be located on a 92-acre site at Alma and Renner roads in Richardson. When completed, the site will represent an expected investment of up to $3 billion by TI over a multi-year period and will be one of the most technologically sophisticated semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the world.

Asia's growing influence in the semiconductor industry is of concern to Shaunna Sowell, site manager for the new $3 billion Texas Instruments semiconductor factory being constructed in Richardson.

However, with the help of semiconductor suppliers, she hopes that the Richardson fab can help change that paradigm.

Sowell spoke to a packed room of 120 people, representing more than 60 companies which provide semiconductor manufacturing equipment, materials, processes, and services -- suppliers such as Air Liquide, Applied Materials, DuPont Photomasks, ASML, Rudolph Technologies, Novellus, TD Industries, Tokyo Electron, VariTech International.

The event was co-hosted by the Richardson Economic Development Partnership and the Dallas chapter of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), the semiconductor suppliers association.

While presenting an update on the progress of construction on the new fab, Sowell took the opportunity to share a broader, industry perspective as to what's happening in semiconductor manufacturing.

“At Texas Instruments, we certainly like to talk about the fact that Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit, which was the birth of the semiconductor industry, an American industry for 30 years,” Sowell said. “It was a big part of the U.S. GDP – in fact, it was the economic locomotive of this country."

She pointed out that there are only three 300 mm manufacturers left in the U.S. “The U.S. is now third in production so there has been an increasing shift in this industry away from the United States,” she said.

Nevertheless, Sowell said the Nov. 18 groundbreaking of the Richardson fab is reason to celebrate. The plant will sit on a 92-acre site and will be more than one million square feet, including 220,000 square feet of clean room space. The 300 mm semiconductor factory will do 60 and 40 nanometer designs.

In order to stay competitive, Sowell reported that the fab is being built with new techniques and a fresh philosophy.

“I'm celebrating that Texas Instruments is building another 300 mm chip factory in the United States, and glad that it's here in Richardson."
