Richardson's Generosity Makes Holiday Special For Hundreds Of RISD Students

Gifts Collected From Chamber's Parade Participants Among Toys Distributed

Dobie Primary parents pick up gifts for their children. The gifts are donated by various groups, including the Richardson Chamber of Commerce.

Hundreds of parents lined up outside RISD's Dobie Primary on a sunny afternoon a week before Christmas. Some were smiling, some were anxious, but all were there for one reason — to provide their children with a happy holiday.

Dobie Primary is the home to nearly 800 pre-k, kindergarten and first grade students. Of these children, more than 80 percent speak only Spanish and 90 percent qualify for the free breakfast/lunch program. In this area of low-income families, Christmas can be a daunting time.

The staff at the primary school, however, goes out of their way to make the holidays a festive time of year. Thousands of toys are collected from various sources, bagged and distributed for more than 600 students. Staff members volunteer to stay late sorting and preparing the toys. Distribution works like clockwork as the volunteers efficiently orchestrate the process, all the while singing and humming along to Christmas carols playing in the background. Parents are grateful and excited, and hugs between parents and teachers are not uncommon.

For years, the RCC's annual Richardson Christmas Parade has collected toys in lieu of a monetary entry fee from parade participants. While only one toy is required per entry, participants were generous this year. Hundreds of toys were collected and donated to both Dobie Primary and Network of Community Ministries.

Dobie Principal Kay Reynolds said, “You are all angels to our children. These toys are a tremendous help to our school family.”
