Richardson Officials Say Groundbreaking Signals Strength In Telecom Corridor® Area

Texas Instruments, UT Dallas Facilities Expected To Act As 'Magnet For Further Growth'

With an eye on the future, the city of Richardson celebrated last week as Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) and the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) held a simultaneous, virtual groundbreaking on two new facilities sure to bring new jobs and bright minds to the area for decades to come.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry provided the keynote address at the breakfast ceremony and joined TI Chairman Tom Engibous, UTD President Franklyn Jenifer and other dignitaries in marking the start of construction on a $3 billion, one-million-square-foot semiconductor chip plant for Texas Instruments and an $85 million, 192,000-square-foot Natural Sciences and Engineering Research building for The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD).

Richardson Mayor Gary Slagel predicted that the Texas Instruments plant will add thousands of jobs to the city's workforce. “Initially, those new jobs will come during the year-plus construction phase and later grow as the staffing of the plant gears up to 1,000 workers at full capacity production. But the jobs will also come as companies locate or expand here to take advantage of the innovation and business opportunities created by the Texas Instruments 300-mm chip manufacturing operation and the increasing research capabilities at UTD,” Slagel said.

Bob Kaiser, chairman of the board for the Richardson Chamber of Commerce, commented: “Over the next year, we expect considerable attention from other companies connected with the semiconductor industry. The TI facility will surely act as a magnet for further growth in this area by research companies, materials and equipment suppliers, software application developers, customers, alliance partners and others. They will take advantage of the tremendous workforce already here as well as bring new jobs and more high-level engineering talent to Richardson.”

Expressing a broader industry perspective, Bill Sproull, president and CEO of the Metroplex Technology Business Council, remarked: “The Texas Instruments facility is the largest single technology company building project ever in Dallas-Fort Worth, and the largest announced in the world last year. It definitely enhances this area's reputation as a high-tech center of research, innovation and entrepreneurship. In addition, Texas economic consultant Ray Perryman has estimated that the long-term impact of the TI fab and investment in UTD research could add more than 80,000 permanent jobs to DFW.”

Likewise, Bill Keffler, Richardson city manager, noted that the economic growth created in the wake of construction of the Texas Instruments and UTD buildings will help fill existing available Class A office and technology space. “It could even create a need for more space. These new and expanding businesses will mean increased tax revenues for the city and more importantly, create many new synergies among our companies and businesses,” he added.
