RISD Students Visit Companies As Part Of Annual Career Day

Two hundred and sixty Richardson North Junior High students traveled to seven area companies and institutions recently for the Richardson Chamber of Commerce's fall 2004 Professional Career Day.

Professional Career Day, a program of the Education Committee of the RCC and the Richardson Independent School District (RISD), provides eighth grade students with career options and educational awareness.

Each host demonstrated technologies and introduced the various jobs encompassed within their organization, while stressing the importance of pursuing higher academics in the areas of math, science, English and writing. Students were able to view facilities, interact with professional mentors and experience hands-on technology demonstrations.

While the day's focus is on the junior high students, the host companies also gain from the experience. Not only are they able to interact with the students, but the companies are also influencing the community's future workforce.

Beth Kolman, community relations at Nortel Networks, has been involved with the event for many years. “Our participation in the Chamber's Professional Career Day is an annual highlight for Nortel Networks.  We enjoy working together to create presentations and skits that are fun, yet truly educational for the students.  Watching the students get excited about engineering and technology is extremely rewarding."

Professional Career Day hosts were the City of Richardson, DART, Nortel Networks, Paragon Innovations, Richardson Regional Medical Center, Richland College and the University of Texas at Dallas.
