November 2004 Volume 1, Issue 13 This issue home | Action home | Chamber home Don't Throw Away Uni-Card Yet Local Restaurants And Bars Need Time To Make Switch Despite the fact that Richardson residents voted overwhelmingly in September to eliminate the need for Unicard-type systems when making alcohol purchases, don't expect such cards to become obsolete. According to Sue Walker, vice president of business development for the Richardson Economic Development Partnership, it may take awhile for restaurants to switch over to the new permit. Until this happens, consumers will still be required to show a membership card and/or a driver's license when making alcohol purchases in restaurants and bars. Some establishments may not choose to change over to the new permit until their current permit expires, which could take up to a year, Walker said. Also, when applying for the new permit, owners must deplete their current inventories as they phase out from under the private club permit. Adding to the confusion, clubs and bars whose revenue is made up of less than 50 percent of food and non-alcohol sales, must continue to operate under a Unicard-type system. |
